Wonderland in Lace: Savage X Fenty Review

Savage X Fenty Volume 4 brought us to a mystical forest that felt eerily similar to what we see in the tales of where nymphs roam in greek mythology. We see an array of dancers opening the stage for Rihanna to appear, dancing to an A$AP song before strutting off the scene.

The scene then transitions to another dance sequence where Actor Winston Duke, Snowfall’s Damson Idris, and influencer Rickey Thompson set the stage.

We see sultry performances from Anitta, Don Toliver, Burna Boy, and even Maxwell graced us with his voice.

The animated transitions that continued the storytelling from one stage set to the next were executed so precisely that the animations resembled exactly the leading characters of the next stage. It was another storytelling component outside of the lighting, set, choreography, and mood music that fell off the bone for me.

But the high point of the moment for me was seeing Sheryl Lee Ralph, aka Dee Mitchell, strut and shake it to Lady Marmalade. Or was it when Taylour Paige gave me life with her Bad-Bitch-activated speech that I now need to say in my mirror every day? Honestly, too many moments made me grin from ear to ear and say, “I know that’s right!”

Overall the performance was transformative and dutifully celebrated the various bodies, faces, and sex appeal typically shied away from in the mass media. From plus-size bodies to post-pregnancy, we saw a celebratory performance of what it means to be powerful in your skin. The debut of this line had a collection of dark lace, corsets, more earth-tone colors, and enough to keep the eye guessing how I could pull that look off in the bedroom.

If I learned anything from this show, as I always do, it’s that it’s not hard to be inclusive and authentic to those around you. The passion placed into Savage X Fenty’s showcase should ignite more fires in companies as a reminder authenticity will always win in today’s world. Rihanna, just take my card now
