It's No Bra Day!

You may be thinking “that was the entire year of 2020 for me,” but what’s the story behind the worldwide celebration?

Bras are a polarizing topic of discussion. Depending on who you are, you may feel that bras hold you up or hold you back. Personally, I’m always going back and forth between love and hate. Hormonal issues have made it impossible to know my bra size for longer than 2 months at a time, and sometimes I feel as though the shape of my body just isn’t conducive to certain brands. Lately, I’ve only been able to wear Aerie, but I used to be a loyal Victoria’s Secret customer. I guess there are some things we mentally and physically outgrow over time.

Today, however, is No Bra Day, and contrary to what you may be thinking, it’s not some dude-created exploitation of breasts– it’s quite the opposite.

Originally observed on July 9th, 2011, No Bra day began as a way to spread awareness of breast cancer. (Sounds like a solid marketing strategy to me!)

Eventually, it was moved to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month and expanded its messaging to include gender equality. It bears repeating: all genders have the potential to develop breast cancer.

No Bra Day has been a point of contention among feminists who fear that the emphasis on bras perpetuates the sexualization of breasts and distracts from the goal of raising awareness of such a deadly disease. Others feel that if the branding is strong, it will help to remind people to get screened, which is the most important takeaway. Honestly, whatever gets the message across (respectfully)!

So while taking your bra off and letting it all hang out for a day may seem liberating, be sure to keep the main message in mind.

Take some time today and find a screening location near you! Low/no-cost options are available.
